Mala bracelets & necklaces
A mala can be used for your meditation or yoga practice, for healing, and for symbolizing your spiritual journey in becoming more mindful and centered. The word ‘mala’ means ‘garland from above’ or ‘heavenly garland’, and is a powerful rosary in Buddhism and Hinduism. A mala necklace typically has 108 beads with a larger guru bead, and can be made from seeds, wood, crystals, or gemstones . They are also known as prayer beads, japa malas, meditation beads, rosary beads, or yoga necklaces or bracelets.
Selecting your mala ~ Use your intuition, sometimes you just ‘know’ or are drawn to one, or if you can’t decide, try closing your eyes and feeling or ‘thumbing’ through the beads. You may also want to choose a mala that has crystals or gemstones that are special or healing to you, or that match your intentions with your body’s chakra points.
Meditating with your mala ~ Just breathe, and then begin to deeply focus your attention on your mantra or affirmation. Start with the bead to the left of the larger center bead, the guru bead, and turn your finger clockwise around each bead and then push that bead away and move onto the next bead – mentally repeating your mantra or affirmation with each bead. Once you arrive at the guru bead, you can stop your practice, or you can turn your mala around and repeat. Mala bracelets are used in the same way, repeating the cycle till 108 recitations have been performed. You may also place your mala on your altar while meditating.
Mantra ~ A single-pointed focus and vibrational sound that aligns you with a frequency that brings peace and stillness into your centre. The most commonly used mantra is OM (said as AUM), which represents your universal consciousness. Learn more on our Mantras & Mudras page.
